“For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”. (2 Corinthians 4:6)
I just love the letters Paul wrote to the early Christians. He was so like a hovering yet loving parent to those in his ministry. You could just sense his urgency in these Letters to ensure that those early Christ Followers in the Church were protected through the knowledge of Christ. He consistently and passionately offered advice to these early followers with loving, yet direct exhortation. You can sense the passion of Paul in his desire to always shine the light of truth.
All week I have been drawn to 2 Corinthians, chapter 4. I have been specifically drawn to verse 4 which says,
“In their case, the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
I don’t know about you but that verse just blows me away. As I read these words it was difficult for me to express in writing and in simplicity; the complexity of what Paul was saying to these early followers. Sometimes the Word of God cannot be shared in single verses. Sometimes there needs to be the knowledge of the entire Book, or Chapter in order to maintain the integrity of the context. I was finding 2 Corinthians 4 to be one of those Chapters.
But I just could not move away from this passage this week. This was really starting to “bug” me.
In the South we have the warm months of late spring and summer. During those times when you turn on your porch light after sunset, you will almost immediately be treated to an aerial display of dozens, if not hundreds, of flying bugs. The artificial light of the porch lights, lanterns, campfires, headlights. and other various artificial sources attract all varieties of moths, flies, beetles, and all sorts of other insects. If you have ever been in the midst of this attack you can relate very well to this experience. If the lights stay on long enough the surface area will be covered in insects. And after a while these insects will be joined by frogs and other insect predators patiently waiting; just hanging around in the darkness to take advantage of the easy pickings.
Unfortunately for the insects, their attraction to artificial light is a cruel trick caused by our cultural innovations in various light sources. The night flying insects were not created to navigate by artificial light. They were created to fly by the natural light of the moon. And by keeping the moons reflected light at a constant angle, the insects could naturally maintain a steady flight path and a straight course.
The artificial lights interfere with an insect’s ability to detect the moonlight. The artificial light can appear brighter, and radiate their light in multiple directions. Once an insect flies close enough to a light bulb, it attempts to navigate by way of the artificial light, rather than the moon. And since the light bulb radiates light on all sides, the insect simply cannot keep the light source at a constant angle, as it does with the moon. It attempts to navigate a straight path, but ends up caught in an endless spiral dance around the bulb. The artificial light creates an endless spiral dance around the bulb as the predators are waiting.
Just as God created us to live by His perfect light source; to navigate a straight path – Sin cast us into the endless spiral dance around the bulb; the artificial light source which is Satan. We believed the lies of Satan as he disguised himself as the angel of light. But God brought the true light out of the darkness and we are given the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. In His great mercy, God shines this knowledge in our hearts. Beloved, when you are being “bugged” by the artificial light sources of Satan and his world, you are encouraged to read God’s Word and pray the spirit to guide you in His perfect truth and shine His Light in your heart. ~ Amen :Y
